Disney’s Moana effectively beaten the domestic film industry for its second week consecutively, with a catch of $28.4 million.
Moana has earned $119.9 million locally, and $177.4 million all inclusive. Globally, the film opened in five new markets (France, Spain, UK, Russia and Mexico) to join China which opened a weekend ago. China posted an expected $5.5 million for the end of the week, which means a drop-off of only 55 percent, for a total in China of $21.3 million.
Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, earned $18.5 million this week to arrive No. 2. The Eddie Redmayne-featuring film, with a locally count of $183.5 million, dropped only 59 percent in its third week.
Another extra doing solid business is Paramount’s science fiction film Arrival. In its fourth week, it earned $7.3 million, to push out Paramount’s other film Allied for the No. 3 spot. Landing, profiting from positive reviews and solid word of mouth, has earned $73 million locally to date.
