Diving into the mystery and meaning of yoga symbols can bring new depth and insight to your yoga practice.
Yoga Poses as Symbols

Many yoga postures are inspired by animals or nature. The images below show some common yoga poses and their nature counterparts. Practicing a posture with the awareness of the symbol it represents can add a new layer of meaning and inspiration to the asana. Once you know what a pose represents, you can use that to reconnect yourself with nature.

Animal Symbols

Bakasana – Crane Pose

Bhekasana – Frog Pose

Garudasana – Eagle Pose

Nature Symbols

Vrksasana – Tree Pose

Padmasana – Lotus Pose

Surya Namaskar – Sun Salutation

The Symbol for “Om”

Om is possibly the most recognizable symbol in yoga. It contains everything in the universe aligned in one, simple sound.

The symbol for Om is written in the ancient language of Sanskrit. Each element of the image has meaning:

-The long large curve at the bottom of the symbol is the dream state.

-The curve in the middle represents deep, dreamless sleep.

-The upper curve is a being in a waking state.

-The crescent shape at the top stands for the veil of illusion, or Maya. The dot within the crescent is the transcendental state. When the human spirit passes through the veil and experiences transcendental awareness, the human is free of the other forms of existence.
